Cartier Roadster Automatic Large Mens Watch
Posted by The Breitling Source under Cartier , Watch Reviews[27] Comments
I’ve been starting to try and branch out towards watches witha non-round shape. I’ve owned a few rectangular watches, such as a Longines Dolce Vita and some others here and there, but I really wanted to try a Tonneau shaped watch, aside from the knock-offs that people give you as gifts when they visit China. So I started first with a Franck Muller Casablanca, which I enjoyed, but it was a bit too clean and basic looking for me I think, considering that I was used to the complicated busy dials of Breitling.
Then I saw the Roadster again… Its a watch that I always admired and really liked the design of, and with my tastes maturing and the need to have something a bit more understated for business, the Roadster seemed perfect. Still a recognizable icon in the watch industry, with a bit more individuality than a Rolex. So I snapped one up.
The Roadster is an extremely well made watch, with a three-peice case. Tonneau shaped but a bit shorter than a Franck Muller from lug to lug. The Large Mens size model I bought is 38mm x 43mm, not including the crown. It wears very close to a typical 40mm Rolex. The models I picked up as the oldeer style dial, but still looks fantastic in my opinion. All the pictures were taken with my new Sony A200 camera with the Kit lens.
In the above pic you can see the blued steel hands and Luminous dots on the inner dial. The sapphire date magnifier is tastefully integrated into the crown area. The crown is not screwdown, so when you wind it you can just turn it.
The bracelet is a beautiful peice of work, with screwed in pins, in a very unique style. There are two screws, one on each side, and when you remove them, you push a pin out of the middle. The bracelet has that smooth, tight feel to it that reminds me of my Breitling Bracelets. The watch is all polished, but the bracelet is brushed in the middle links.
Here is a shot of the back, showing a bit more of the bracelet, and notice how the design of the crown even bulges on the back of the watch. That is a very nice attention to detail.
The obligatory wrist shot… showing what it looks like on my 6 3/4″ wrist. The bracelet sizes a bit loose on me. Unfortunately with those double butterfly clasps there is rarely a micro adjustment available, and many don’t have half-links either.
And here’s a rare movement shot of the Cartier Roadster. Very nicely finshed Cartier Caliber 3110, base ebauche ETA 2892-2, 21 Jewel movement. The rotor is decorated with the Roadster logo, which is a nice touch, rather than just a generic Cartier signed rotor, making this specific to only this model of watch.
As you can see there is plenty of circular graining on the bridges as well. Overall, a beautiful watch inside and out. I will be enjoying mine!
Here are the quick specs:
Movement: Automatic Calibre 3110 Movement (Base ETA 2892-2)
Case: Stainless Steel
Crystal: Sapphire Crystal w/Date Magnifier
Diameter: 43mm x 38mm

Hi,
I have had the Roadster you described for 5 1/2 years. I love it as much today as the day I bought it. It started losing time, about a minute every few days, recently. So, I sent it to Cartier, and it required a “complete overhaul” at $495. Well, it was worth every penny because not only did they overhaul the movement, they polished it and it looks like a brand new watch. I have one question for you. It seems now to be running a bit fast, about 5 seconds a day. Do you think it will settle in and run at normal time soon? I am guessing this is simply due to the “tune up”.

Its a beautiful isn’t it 🙂
Running +5 seconds a day is pretty standard, and within COSC standards. It can probably be regulated closer, but it is running at an acceptible rate.

Hi
I have a Roadster 2 tone, 3yrs old and bought from a friend. It works perfectly but wondered if you knew how long the power reserve is after a full wind? I think it’s running out of power quite quickly..
Thanks
Will

Power Reserve should be around 42hours give or take. If its running out quick it needs to be serviced.

I have a roadster for 2.5 years. Hardly wear it but picked it up the other day and noticed that is makes noises now.Nothing loose on the inside but if you shake it you can feel the winding mechanism. I called Cartier and they said it is normal due to lubricant settling. I have since purchased a winder and the noise is still present. Is this normal?

That noise is just the Rotor turning on the inside of the watch, and it is normal. It has nothing to do with the lubricant settling as far as I know. The rotor will always make a little bit of noise on an automatic watch when you move it around.

I could not help but notice that the hands (both the hour and the minute) are quite different on your pictures compared to the hands on the same model on the cartier pages; are there different versions?
December 30th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Not only are the hands different, but the dial is different too. Notice that the Roman Numerals do not extend to the edge of the dial, but only follow around in a circle. This is because this is not the current dial version of the watch, but an older one.

Just received watch winder for Christmas and i was trying to find out TPD (turns per day) that would best fit for my Cartier Roadster and it also had three position directional switch: clockwise, counterclockwise, automatic bidirectional? Any help would be greatly appreciated?

It would depend on which kind of Roadster you have possibly.. but your watchwinder company should be able to provide that kind of info. Orbita has a databse on their site giving instructions for nearly every single watch. I would “guess” that your Roadster probably would work Bidirectional at around 600-700 TPD, but that’s just my guess.

Hi… I have bought a Roadster and I would love to see some pictures of it´s insides, the pic on your post is good, but I´d like to see more. Do you know where can I see some more pictures?
January 7th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
That’s the only one I took, sorry.
You can open your own Roadster if you would like to see more pictures of the inside.

Why would you come to a totally english blog, write a response in what appears to be Spanish, and then somehow think that I would understand?

I have a Roadster. I wear it 3 to 4 times a day. I wind it 30 – 40 turns but lately I an having issues getting it to started. It does not start working even after I want wond it. Is it time for a service or am I missing something?
October 21st, 2010 at 9:30 am
It sounds like you might need a service. If the watch is not starting after you’ve wound it 30-40 times, you may have a problem.

My theory is that metal bands tend to compete with the watch face
for attention, while rubber straps do not, and so the rubber straps tend to show the watch face off better.
June 29th, 2011 at 5:41 pm
Which is why you sell rubber straps.

Hi, I have the exact same watch given to me. However, When I opened it the motor is a lot different. There is no Cartier text, instead it has “H.B.C” and underneath is “25 Jewels Swiss Made”. It is very well built and the glass is scratch proof and seems high quality. I originally thought it was authentic, but seeing your pic made me think it is just a replica? Is there anyway to confirm this? The internal looks like this: [link removed]
but instead of the word Cartier it has the text I mentioned above. Thanks!

Well, seeing as the link you just sent with the photo of the interior is from a fake watch seller, I will have to tell you your watch is fake.

Hi mate can you tell me what the difference is between a roadster and a roadster GMT, which one is worth more and the better one to have, kind regards
August 26th, 2013 at 12:14 pm
GMT is larger and has the GMT hand. However, there is a larger regular Roadster as well now, and the only difference between that model and the GMT would be the GMT hand, and some dial differences of course.

I have the cartier roadster S with 3 interchangable bands (Rubber, Nylon and Stainless Steel). I’m in my 20’s, so it has that youthful look that suits my style, just simply an amazing watch. I heard Cartier were going to discontinue Roadster?
November 20th, 2013 at 11:09 am
Yes the Cartier Roadster was discontinued earlier this year.
