I picked up a Glycine Airman World Timer a while back, and actually put it up for sale. I figured I’d do a quick review of this before sending it off. I’ve always liked the Glycine Airman watches, especially the world timers. The 46mm version here was really interesting to me because it has 24mm lugs, allowing for the use of 44mm Panerai Straps to be swapped in, and the exposed lug holes allow for you to use tubes in the straps as well.

This example has a beautiful blue brushed dial with standard indexes as well as a 24hr chapter ring for the GMT hand and an additional 24hr bezel that can be adjusted to allow for a third timezone. This means that you can see three timezones at a glance, a very nice feature that most GMT watches don’t have. The second crown at 3:30 unlocks the bezel and it spins freely once its been unlocked, rather than having ratcheting.

Movement is a base ETA2892 decorated very sparsely with little more than a Glycine signature, but is nonetheless visible through the exhibition caseback. The watch also has a screwdown crown and features 200m water resistance and sapphire crystal. The casework on the Glycine watches that I have owned are decent, but not up to the standards of watches such as Rolex, Breitling or Omega, as as such I find the case build to be a bit less exciting than the overall style and heritage behind the watch. The Airman is an iconic aviation watch that has been around for a long time and therein lies the charm.

I apologize beforehand for the photos, as they were meant to be for selling the watch, not reviewing it. The Box that accompanies the Glycine is the one that I’ve gotten with most of my Glycine watches, aside from the Limited edition Glycine SST D24. Its a spartan looking thing, with barely enough room for the papers that come with it! At any rate, its not about the box, its about the watch, right? I think Glycine watches are great, and for the second-hand prices they command, they are a great watch. I wouldn’t pay retail, but if you can score one you like used – they’re good for the money!

My second Glycine that I’ve owned is this outstanding and uniquely beautiful Glycine Airman SST D24 Limited Edition Watch. This watch has the iconic Glycine Airman SST case, in a large 44mm diameter, double sapphires, and bezel control crown at 2 o’clock (4 o’clock on the 24hr dial of the Glycine). This watch is a limited edition of 300 peices, so is rather rare. Other versions of ths Airman SST are readily available, while this version is a bit more rare.

As you can see, the SST D24 has a very shallow but wide dial, and a very visible 24hr dial and 24hr chapter ring that allows you to read three 24 hour time zones in one glance. The color combinations of using all yellow for one timezone and all orange for another makes it easy to distinguish all three timezones. The main hour hand on this model is also a 24 hour hand in addition to the double sided 24-hour GMT Hand. The D24 in the model name stands for “Double 24″.

How the watch works is you set the main 24hour hand to the current time, then follow by setting the yellow end of the GMT hand to the second time zone you wish to read. The third timezone is finally set buy turning the crown at 2 o’clock so that the desired time corresponds to the orange pointy end of the GMT hand. Do not mistakening think that the Orange and Yellow GMT hand is two independent hands.

The large 44mm case wears very large due to the shape of the case, and also sites very low and sleek on the wrist, giving the watch a very different feeling that most other watches would give. I recently traded this watch, but unfortunately in my haste, I forgot to make a video review of this watch so this static review is all you guys are going to get!

Nice shot of the exhibition back here. The Gold Gilted rotor has the SST 06 engraved on it, and looks quite nice. The movement is an ETA 2892-A2 with GMT module, and modifed to have dual 24hour hands. Not sure if Glycine does the modification in house or if it is received this way from ETA.

The requisite wrist shot. Very nicely sitting on my wrists, this one works well for both large and small wrists. I like this watch so much that now that it’s gone, I think I want to purchase another one! Hope you guys enjoyed the review.

In my conitnuing search for good Budget watches, I got my first Glycine watch and it’s a very cool watch. I had seen a friends Glycine Airman D24, with the three separate hour hands and decided it was time for me to get a Glycine and see what the fuss is all about. While the Airman is not quite as fancy nor as desirable as the D24, it does have a similar feel with its large flat face and easily readable dial.

The Glycine Combat 4 is available in four or five different dial lume colors, all with a black dial. This one in particular has the yellow/green numbers and is my favourite. The other options include White, Blue, Red and I believe Orange though I’m not sure. The information online available for Glycine watches in general is very limited. Maybe it’s time for a glycinesource.com?? haha.. maybe not.

The Combat 4 has a nicely decorated Swiss ETA 2824-2 movement, and of course the entire watch is Swiss Made. It does not have a specification as to whether or not the crystal is Mineral or Sapphire, and the information available online is limited, but I am assuming that it is Mineral, as Glycine does use a lot of mineral crystals.

It is a bit strange seeing a watch that retails north of $800 with a Mineral Crystal (I am assuming), but it is a very nice watch. The dial is a very large one, with a case diameter of 43mm. This watch wears large for it’s size. The bracelet is also a very nice one. It feels really loose when you move it around, but it sits and molds to your wrist very nicely. When I strap this watch on, I want to look at it.. the dial just jumps out at me.

There it is on my 6 3/4″ wrists, and it really fills it out. The lume on this watch is one of the best I’ve seen. It starts glowing immediately and holds it longer than most watches I have. This guy is water resistant to 50M, and does not have a screwdown crown. A very simple watch, but it has that simple, but not too simple style to it with a touch of Pilot watch and a touch of sport watch. It looks simple, but it stands out, and looks great.

I think I need to get another Glycine now!
